Keep that Spray Tan Sun-Kissed Glow

Getting a spray tan is a great way to get that sun-kissed glow without spending hours in the sun’s harmful rays making sure to flip over at certain times and trying not to burn. A healthier and far easier option is to get a spray tan, but we’ve all seen the horror stories – -tans that come out orange or that leave behind a streaky and splotchy mess.

The good news is that, when cared for properly, a professional spray tan can produce a vibrant, healthy glow AND can endure for a substantial amount of time. So what exactly do you need to know about getting a spray tan? We’ll break it down for you right here.

How to Prep Your Skin for a Spray Tan

The most important thing you can do before a spray tan is to exfoliate. Once you get sprayed, exfoliating is going to be off-limits, so if this is regular part of your routine, you’ll want to get this done ahead of time. Additionally, removing excess dead skin cells before your tan will ensure that your skin is primed and ready to absorb the colour evenly and deeply. This will help your tan last longer.

You’ll also want to take care of any shaving or waxing at least 24 hours ahead of time. This doesn’t affect the effectiveness of the spray tan, but you will need to abstain from hair removal for a bit afterwards especially with older razors that might exfoliate away some of your colour.

Caring for Your Spray Tan

Once you have been spray tanned, it’s up to you to take care of it. The better you do this, the longer your new sun-kissed skin will last. The first 3-8 hours afterwards are the most important. The exact timing will depend if you opt for our fast-activating tan, which works in 3 hours or our overnight tan which takes 8 hours. These first few hours are when your colour starts to develop. It’s important to remember that water is a spray tan’s worst enemy, especially during this time. Even hand-washing is off-limits. Be careful not to engage in any activities that will cause you to sweat excessively for the same reason.

As you leave your appointment, wear loose or baggy clothes and flip flops or sandals if you can. And check the weather. If there is rain in the forecast, pack an umbrella just in case.

Here are some common questions people ask about their spray tans.

When can I shower after a spray tan?

You’ll need to refrain from showering for at least 8 hours while the colour develops. If you can, we recommend that you let the developer stay on overnight. Once you do decide to shower, keep it to a rinse. You’ll see the colour coming off, but don’t worry. This is perfectly normal. Make sure that it comes off completely, but don’t scrub at it with soaps, loofahs or washcloths. Rinse only and use lukewarm water if you can. When you get out of the shower, pat yourself dry with a soft, non-abrasive towel.

When can I wash my hair after a spray tan?

Don’t wash your hair in your first shower after your tan. The chemicals in the shampoo and conditioner can affect your tan, so wait at least 24 hours before washing your hair. When you do use a shampoo, make sure that is sulfate-free, and if you let your hair sit with conditioner in it before rinsing, make sure that it is pulled up so that it is not touching your skin as you wait.

What moisturiser should I use after a spray tan?

Moisturiser is important to use in order to extend the life of your tan, but it must be a non-oil based product otherwise it can leave streaks or fade your tan. We recommend using products that are oil and fragrance free, ideally without harsh chemicals, and moisturising twice a day after your first shower.

Can you put sunscreen on after a spray tan?

It’s important to remember that spray tans are not alternatives to sunscreen. They don’t offer any natural protection against the sun, so you’ll still want to wear a non-oil based sunscreen whenever you are headed outside. Avoid options with fragrances and harsh chemicals, but definitely don’t skip the sunscreen.

What products do you recommend?

So glad you asked. The products that you use are so important for the life of your tan and for the health of your skin in general. The line that we stand behind is Three Warriors. You can check out their amazing products we stock right here.

By keeping all of the above practices in mind, your spray tan should develop evenly and last for a good 4-7 days. Keep in mind that healthy skin showcases a spray tan best, so in addition to moisturising your skin on the outside, be sure to stay hydrated from within, drinking plenty of water and eating an abundance of fruits and vegetables.

If you follow these guidelines, we are positive that your spray tan experience will be a positive one. You’ll get to enjoy all the benefits of a tan without all the side of effects of sitting in the sun. You can have healthy skin that glows as if it was perfectly bronzed in the sun, and we’re excited to help you achieve it.
