Key takeaways
- You don’t need any special knowledge before your first facial; your therapist tailors it to your skin on the day.
- Not sure where to start? Try the 50-minute Classic Facial, or book an Observ® skin consultation first for a personalised plan.
- Pause retinol, acids and scrubs two to three days before, and avoid sunburn, fake tan and facial waxing beforehand.
- Makeup is fine on the day. Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early and tell your therapist about any medications or recent skin changes.
- A facial follows a set flow: consultation, cleanse, exfoliation, vitamin infusion, mask, massage and finishing products.
- It shouldn’t hurt. Mild pinkness or a small breakout afterwards is normal and settles quickly.
Booking your first facial is exciting, but it’s normal to feel a little unsure. What will the therapist do? Do you need to arrive with a bare face? Will your skin look red afterwards? The good news is that a professional facial is one of the most relaxing ways to care for your skin, and there’s nothing you need to know in advance. This guide walks you through your first facial at Escape Skin & Body in Hobart: how to prepare, what happens in the treatment room, and how to get the most from your results.
How to Prepare for Your First Facial
Choose the Right Facial
If you’re not sure where to start, our Classic Facial is a great first step. It’s a 50-minute treatment tailored to your skin on the day. If you have a specific concern, such as breakouts, pigmentation, dryness or fine lines, we also offer facials designed for each one. Want a clearer picture first? Our skin consultation uses Observ® skin analysis to show what’s happening beneath the surface. You’ll leave with a personalised treatment plan, so your first facial is matched to your skin.
In the Week Before
- Pause strong actives. Stop retinol, exfoliating acids and scrubs two to three days before, unless your therapist advises otherwise.
- Avoid waxing or threading on the face for a few days beforehand.
- Skip sunbathing and fake tan on the face. Sunburnt or freshly tanned skin can’t be treated as effectively.
- Make a note of your skincare products and any medications. This helps your therapist choose the right products for you.
On the Day
- Makeup is fine. Your therapist will remove it during the cleanse, so there’s no need to arrive bare-faced.
- Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to fill out your client form and settle in.
- Tell us about recent changes, such as new medications, pregnancy, cosmetic injectables or skin reactions.
- Leave time after your appointment if you can. Many clients like to go home and let their skin rest, rather than rushing back to work with fresh makeup.

What Happens During a Facial: Step by Step
Every facial is tailored, but most follow a similar flow. Here’s what you can expect in our Classic Facial.
- Consultation. Your therapist asks about your skin type, concerns, routine and lifestyle, then looks closely at your skin. This is your chance to mention anything you’d like to focus on.
- Cleanse. Makeup, sunscreen and the day’s build-up are gently removed, so the products that follow can work properly.
- Exfoliation. Dead skin cells are lifted away to reveal smoother, brighter skin. The method is chosen to suit your skin, so sensitive skin gets a gentler approach.
- Vitamin infusion. A vitamin-rich treatment helps your skin absorb nutrients and moisture.
- Prescriptive mask. A mask matched to your skin’s needs on the day, whether that’s hydration, calming or clarifying.
- Massage. Many clients say this is the highlight. Your therapist massages your face, décolletage and shoulders to ease tension and boost circulation.
- Finishing products. Your treatment finishes with serum, moisturiser and SPF where needed, so your skin is protected when you leave.
Will It Hurt?
No. A classic facial should feel calm and comfortable. Some products may tingle slightly, but you should never feel burning or pain. If anything feels uncomfortable, tell your therapist and they’ll adjust the treatment straight away.
Do I Have to Talk?
Only if you want to. Some clients enjoy a chat, while others drift off during the massage. Both are completely fine.
After Your First Facial
Most people leave with skin that feels softer, looks brighter and is beautifully hydrated. A little pinkness straight after is normal, especially after exfoliation and massage, and it usually settles within a few hours.
Is It Normal to Break Out After a Facial?
Sometimes. A facial can bring congestion that was already under the skin to the surface. Any small breakouts should clear within a few days. If you notice redness or irritation that doesn’t settle, give us a call so we can advise you.
Looking After Your Skin Afterwards
The first 24 to 48 hours matter most, so keep your routine simple and protect your skin from the sun. Our guide to post-facial skincare tips covers exactly what to do.
Before you leave, ask your therapist when to book your next facial. Read how often you should visit a beauty salon for a guide to building a routine.
